Biofuels are the scapegoat for the increasing land competition, rising prices of commodities and deforestation of tropical rainforests.
As reaction there is an increasing concern in Europe requiring the prohibition of biofuels import in order to avoid the undesirable ecological impact which comes along with the expansion of biofuel production in Indonesia, Brazil and other countries. However, by this means, also producers of eco-friendly and highly saving GHG biofuels will be punished. The international certification of eco-friendly biofuels represents a better alternative to the closing of the market. In doing so, eco-friendly and harmful fuels get separated.
Certification is ineffective if carried out only for biofuels. It is necessary to extent it to all forms of biomass to avoid „Leakage effects”. The certification of agricultural production for food and feed, other energetic uses as well as material uses is also to be aimed.
